Trip Journal

I would go back to Vienna just to go to Urbanek. The atmosphere, the hospitality, and the quality of the food blew me away.

Nestled within the many stalls of Naschmarkt is an incredible deli packed to the ceiling with meat, cheese, and wine. I walked past this place two or three times before finding the door so don't be discouraged. Look for a red sign above the door that says "Urbanek Spezialitäten."

You will get transported into a whole new world when you step through the door. This tiny place is magical. I ended up spending multiple hours here talking to the most amazing locals. They can fit five people (maybe) on a good day but they will make sure to make room for you!

I'd recommend a glass of the classic Grüner Veltliner or Gemischter Satz. Both are whites from the area. If you like Sauvignon Blanc, go for the Grüner Veltliner. It tends to be dry, crisp, and acidic. Gemischter Satz comes from the technique of planting different varietals in the same field and picking/co-fermenting them together. A unique process that creates a beautiful wine. If you are looking for a red, the Blaufränkisch has red and black fruit flavors with a hint of spice. If you are there long enough...try them all! They won't be shy to tell you their favorites. It might be impossible to stay for just one glass.

As for food, go with a charcuterie board. They will make it based on the number of people in your group. If you have preference, they will ask but I recommend you go with their picks. If you are lucky a local vendor will bring something in and you will get a taste of it!

Owners are so friendly and speak english. Anthony Bourdain has also been there!

I seriously can't speak more highly of this place.
