Figlmüller
Famously known for their massive schnitzel. Thin, crispy, and delicious.
Pro Tip
Make a reservation!! There are two locations Wollzeile and Bäckerstraße. I ate at the original, Wollzeile, and was able to walk right in with my reservation. If you go with someone else, I'd recommend you split the schnitzel so you can try multiple items.
Rathausplatz
My favorite Christmas market and the most busy. Situated right outside city hall, this market had tons of food, drinks, and Christmas goodies for sale.
Pro Tip
If you want to avoid the crowds, go right as the sun is setting. You get to see the lights and enjoy the stalls without bumping into (as many) people or waiting in long lines.
Schönbrunn Palace
Stunning exterior. I went for the Christmas market but you can buy a ticket and see the interior as well as a light show from November-January.
Pro Tip
My favorite Christmas tree from my visit to Austria was at here and the best Käsekrainer (sausage filled with cheese)!
St. Stephen's Cathedral
Right in the center of town, this cathedral is a great starting point in downtown Vienna. Walk the streets around the cathedral. There are so many fun shops and restaurants you can pop into.
Pro Tip
If you go during Christmas time, there is a market that circles the cathedral. Tons of food and drink options!
Schloss Belvedere
The exterior of this building is beautiful and surrounded by well-maintained gardens and landscaping. Inside, you’ll find an impressive art collection featuring many works by Gustav Klimt, including his iconic painting The Kiss.
Pro Tip
There is a small Christmas market here during the winter.
Demel
A historic pastry shop serving up Austrian scrambled pancakes also known as Kaiserschmarrn. Served with a fruit compote and powdered sugar, these are light and great for breakfast or a mid-day treat.
Pro Tip
If you don't want to wait for a table, there is a takeout counter located to the left of the shop, and the line moves quickly. If you prefer to dine in, it's worth arriving before opening to secure a seat with the first group of customers seated.
Gasthaus Poschl
A great, less touristy, place for a meal. I went specifically for the Grießnockerlsuppe which consists of semolina dumplings in a clear broth. I have heard great things about the schnitzel and goulash as well.
Pro Tip
If you want to make a reservation, you have to call the restaurant directly.
