I am always on the look out for local cuisine when I arrive in a new city. As much as I am a tourist, I try to live like the locals as best I can. Since I often travel alone, I have been attempting to muster up the courage to talk to locals...this brings us to Salzburg.

I don't speak a lick of Austrian so the signage at the Salzburg Christmas market was quite overwhelming for me. It all looked good but I was so lost reading the options. I looked to my left and saw a sweet looking woman. I turned to her and asked what the best item was on the menu. She went through the options with me but told me "Haunsberger" is what the locals eat.

A flattened sausage with mustard, sauerkraut, and curry on a bun. It honestly didn't sound great to me but she was getting one and so I followed her lead. We ended up chatting and she paid for my food. I got to know her story and she learned about mine. I got invited to her table, met her entire family, and ate my haunsberger with them.

I ended up really liking the food, I did have some mulled wine in me at that point, but the true discovery was the kindness and warmth of the locals in Salzburg.

I only went for a day trip and ended up wishing I stayed longer. This is my little reminder to put yourself out there...with food and people!
