Visit the Wanaka Tree

I recommend visiting during the shoulder season, as it can get crowded in the summer.
Paraglide from Treble Cone
A thrilling way to experience Wanaka from above, with amazing views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The takeoff is smooth and the pilots are highly experienced. I booked mine on Get Your Guide.
Pro Tip
Bring a blanket and watch the paragliders land. I got there early, and there were multiple groups gliding in. There is a large open area that’s perfect if someone wants to come and watch you.

Hands-down the best restaurant in Wanaka. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, and the seasonal dishes change regularly to highlight fresh, local ingredients.

Order the lamb shank right when you sit down. It takes about 45 minutes to prepare.

A fun, centrally located winery with unique takes on classic varietals.

You will need to make a reservation in advance but tastings are free.
Roy's Peak
The famously challenging hike in Wanaka. Most people start early in the morning, hiking in the dark to reach the summit in time for sunrise. It’s an unforgettable and difficult experience. The full hike takes about six hours.
Pro Tip
Bring plenty of snacks, water, and a headlamp. I went in winter, and the sunrise wasn’t great. The effort of the hike really feels worth it when you get a good sunrise, so winter may not be the best time to go.
